Have you been to our Beloved Prickly pear hidden garden? Prickly pear cactus, also known as Nopales, are not only beautiful, but can be a healthy and delicious addition to your diet. Their name has its origin on the nahuatl more informally known as Aztec, an ancient mesoamerican civilization.
Nopal is been recently considered a superfood. Why? Studies reveal they are good for the treatment of serveral conditions, such as diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity and can even reduce hangovers, also help decrease risk of heart disease and stroke.
However, more research is needed to confirm these benefits.
It might be to soon to call Prickly pear a superfood, but is definitely good for your health because it contains essential vitamins and minerals like: potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, vitamin A, in the form of beta-carotene and vitamin C. Nopal Cactus is the only plant to contain 24 of the known betalains, which are potent anti-inflammatory agents.
Prickly pear cactus is also famous for its high content of fiber, antioxidants and carotenoids. It can be eaten whole, boiled or grilled. You can mix it with veggies or meat, whole as fresh salad, grilled with cheese and much more.
